A golden-hour singletrack trail winding through oak woodlands in Placerita Canyon near Santa Clarita

Trail Spotlight

East Walker Ranch Trail: Placerita Canyon's Hidden Loop

Tucked at the eastern end of Placerita Canyon, the 140-acre East Walker Ranch open space is one of the quietest, most scenic loops in the SCV hiking rotation: oak groves, seasonal streams, viewpoints over the valley, and a fraction of the crowds you will find at the more famous trailheads. Here is Sam's complete guide.

What to Expect at East Walker Ranch

East Walker Ranch is a 140-acre open space at 16723 Placerita Canyon Road, off the 14 freeway at Placerita Canyon Road, at the eastern end of Placerita Canyon near the Angeles National Forest. The land was once part of the Walker family's ranch, settled in the early 1900s, and it is now managed as a nature preserve with well-built singletrack that winds through oak groves, across seasonal streams, and up to ridgelines with views over the canyon and the valley below.

The preserve has three named trails totaling about 3.6 miles, and the network connects directly to the larger Golden Valley Ranch Open Space, so ambitious hikers can keep going. It is dog-friendly and open to hikers, trail runners, mountain bikers, and equestrians, which makes it one of the most versatile afternoons in the SCV trail system.

The Main Route

Walker Loop · 1.6 miles

Starts at the parking lot, climbs into the hills, runs along a ridge with benches, and loops back down. The classic introduction.

The Longer Loop

East Walker Loop · ~3.4 miles

Around 600 feet of elevation gain and 1.5 to 2 hours on trail, with the best viewpoints and oak shade. Sam's pick for a proper workout.

Difficulty

Moderate · Mostly Sun-Exposed

Sections are fairly steep, so bring water even in cool weather. Early mornings and late afternoons are the comfortable windows.

Getting There

Take the 14 freeway to the Placerita Canyon Road exit, head east past the Placerita Canyon Nature Center trailheads, and continue to 16723 Placerita Canyon Road at the top of the canyon. Parking is free in a medium-size dirt and gravel lot at the trailhead, and the trail is generally not crowded, even on weekends.

16723 Placerita Canyon Road, Santa Clarita, CA 91321. Free parking at the trailhead.

When to Go

October through April is the sweet spot for East Walker Ranch: the seasonal streams flow, the oaks drop golden leaves, and the ridge views stay clear. Summer mornings work if you start before 8 AM. Golden hour is postcard-grade, with the canyon glowing and long shadows across the singletrack, which is my favorite time to bring first-time visitors.

One honest note: the July 2016 Sand Fire burned hard through this canyon, so the landscape is a beautiful mosaic of recovering oaks and new growth. Please stay on the marked trails and respect the regrowth, exactly as the preserve asks.

Sam's East Walker Packing List

  • Water, and more than you think: most of the loop is sun-exposed.
  • Layers. The canyon runs cooler than the valley floor, then warms fast.
  • Leash and a collapsible bowl if your dog comes along.
  • A phone or camera for the ridge views over Placerita Canyon.

Know Before You Go

  • Stay on marked trails: the canyon is still recovering from the 2016 Sand Fire.
  • Free parking, but the lot is medium-size; arrive early on holiday weekends.
  • Shared use: expect mountain bikers and equestrians on the wider sections.
  • Cell service can be spotty in the canyon; let someone know your plan.
